Meditation cures Chronic Constipation and Insomnia

Jenny Gao, Toronto

I am a thirty-something hairstylist in Toronto.

Due to a car accident a few years ago, my spine was injured. To relieve chronic back pain, I needed regular acupuncture and orthopedic treatment. On top of that, for 17 years, I suffered from chronic constipation and occasionally had digestive problems requiring medication.  I also had sleep issues – unable to fall asleep each night until well past midnight.

In September 2012, I joined the Bodhi Meditation 8.5-Day Health and Happiness Retreat.

During the retreat, whenever I practiced the Meditation of Greater Illumination, brilliant light literally appeared in front of my eyes.  I felt that I was immersed in this bright light.  I was at ease, relaxed and full of energy.  I felt blissful.

On the second day of the retreat, I started spontaneous fasting*, continuing the fast for 7 days in a row.  I was full of energy, and effortlessly lost 10 pounds. By the end of the retreat, my sleep had returned to normal.  Even more gratifying was that my years of chronic constipation became a thing of the past. I had fully recovered! My chronic back pain was much alleviated and my digestion improved to the extent I no longer needed to take digestive medication.**

Beyond these wonderful physical health gains, meditation also improved my temperament. After the retreat, I became more relaxed, more cheerful.  Now slow to anger, I have learned to use a compassionate, tolerant and gentle heart to understand and care for those around me. I am also much more giving and generous towards my family – which has not gone unnoticed by my husband and children. My mother-in-law and I now get along much better than before.  I can honestly say that my family relationships have become loving and harmonious.

I now volunteer actively at the Toronto Bodhi Meditation Center. I am very happy doing so and hope others like me can benefit from Bodhi Meditation practice!

*Editor’s Note: Spontaneous fasting is a naturally occurring process whereby one eats much less than usual or does not eat at all, yet is neither hungry nor thirsty. During this natural and spontaneous process, one is still filled with energy and vitality and both the body and mind are more relaxed.

** Bodhi Meditation does not encourage stopping or reducing medications on your own. Please follow your doctor’s advice.

Note: Effects of meditation may vary by individual.
